Mara starts each morning by wedging yesterday’s clay, folding air and memory out of the material before it reaches the wheel. Her shelves are lined with pieces that almost worked: a rim that leaned too far, a glaze that settled in an unexpected way. Nothing is wasted; each attempt teaches the next.
When a bowl is finished, it carries the small differences of the hands that shaped it. That is the point. The pieces we return to are rarely identical, and never need to be.

There is a particular ease to a table set without a plan. A linen runner that has softened with use, the plate you found at a market, a glass that does not match the others. They make room for the evening to be ordinary, which is often when it is most welcome.
Light a candle before the food is ready. Put the good bowl in the middle. Let dinner take as long as it takes. You do not need a reason to make a little space for yourself and the people you love.
